Calcium is necessary for good bones and teeth. We have been told that all our lives from our parents, doctors and medias. What they have not told us is what happens when we don’t get enough calcium, our bodies rob it from our bones. We have been told that our bones need calcium, but to be robbed of it. That’s alarming!

Calcium is a mineral that also makes our muscles and nerves operate properly. It’s essential that we have it. We don’t have a choice. When we are lacking calcium, and most of us do, it will be removed from our bones. This is really the normal process. It’s what occurs next that gives us problems. There are many foods that contain calcium. Milk is one food that does. Both low-fat milk and whole milk contain calcium. Calcium is found in cheese, dairy products and green leafy vegetables. The trouble is as grownups we require between 1000-1300 mg daily. What we lose is 400 to 500 mg a day so we can’t afford to omit one day. When we try, we can eat adequate foods rich in calcium but if we fail that, we need the vitamin supplement calcium.

Remember the little old lady crouched over with osteoporosis and the ad tells us to drink milk, eat dairy products and take the vitamin supplement calcium. You can see why the little old lady looks like that when you know that our bodies will react like it must. Our bodies have the knowledge to go get the calcium it requires and that is just what it does by stealing from our bones. Now it is up to you to put it back.
